| Claire, domestic violence is a dreadful crime and everything possible should be done to protect women from their partners who inflict these awful injuries upon them.But why do these women stay with these vile people ? Surely if these women have been assaulted, you would think they would pack their bags and be gone, but unfortunately,most of these women just keep going back for more.During my time with the Met we saw this all the time, and for some reason friday used to be the favourite day for handing out beatings.I remember 4 women in particular that we did everything possible to help, but they just kept going back for more.1 woman in particular used to ring 2 or 3 times every week saying her partner had beaten her and shecwanted him arrested.She always refused medical aid, and by the time police arrived at her house, the boyfriend had spoken to her all lovey dovey, and she would refuse to make any allegations.One time we managed to arrest the boyfriend as he was outside the house screaming and shouting when we arrived, so he was arrested and taken to the station.A female officer and a social worker went to see the female asking her to make a statement.The boyfriend was in custody, if she would make a statement, we could keep him in custody overnight and put him before magistrates in the morning.We would then ask for him to be refused bail and while he was in custody awaiting a trial date, the social worker would arrange to have her and her 8 month old baby moved to a different part of the country.She refused because she 'loved him'and again refused to make any allegations.As she had withdrawn her statement, the boyfriend coukd no longer be held because now he had only been accused of a section 8 offence, which carried a non custodial sentance.The male was released from custody at 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon.By 5pm the woman was dead.He had gone straight to her house and killed her.The womans family made numerous complaints against the police claiming they never gave her any assistance when she called them when in fact, they had bent over backwards to help her.Of course, everything was documented snd time stamped so they could prove the family were lying.This was just one of the many tragic cases I saw where time and time again a woman would call the police to an abusive partner, and then refuse to make any allegation when the police arrived.It was extremely frustrating for the attending police officer, who knew, as soon as he saw the address of his next call, that it would be a waste of time.Police take domestic violence extremely seriously and will do whatever they can to help.But if the woman refuses to substantiate an allegation, there really isn't very much they can do. |
