| Although I now make a meagre living selling a magazine which raises awareness of the issue outside a supermarket in Chiswick I feel I am relatively lucky. This country enjoys peace and stability whereas the war torn country I come from is afflicted with ethnic strife. I was grateful to be given asylum here but many of my friends and relations were not and have been killed. People here are generally kind and if they do not give money they often smile or look embarrassed that they have not. Some take the time to talk. One or two men are rude. They remind me of people from home whose lives have been a failure which they come to blame on people from different ethnics groups rather than admitting they could be at fault. For one woman I occasionally look after her dogs while she shops. For this she gives me a small amount of money. I don't particularly like her dogs and she makes a great display of giving me the money but I am not in a position to be choosy. One day she brought me a sandwich instead of cash for the service I provide her. It was a variety of sandwich I don't like and I would prefer the money as I consider paying for a pre-made sandwich wasteful. She was very cross when I said I didn't want the sandwich and accused me of ingratitude and lacking in Christmas spirit. She said she would tell as many people as possible about how her good deed was not appreciated. Perhaps she hopes fewer people will buy my magazine. She will tell you I lack what she calls Christmas goodwill. I do not know what that is but judging by her actions it is something I can do without. |
