From the replies so far received, and noting that there are two apparent streams entering the river within 100-150 yards of each other just downstream of the railway bridge, no 1. being the one I first wrote about which flows down between the Bulls Head and the bridge and no 2 which comes out just where Thames Road kinks round past Riverview Grove and no 186 Thames Rd and then kinks back into Grove Park Road ... I would guess that the Loraine Road sink hole is, if it is relevant, connected to no 2. These sink holes often do reflect underground watercourses. As for no 1, Mrs Thackeray's account of a culvert behind Whitehall Gardens seems consistent with that watercourse being the one coming out just upstream of the Bulls Head. At some point I will go and make enquiries in the Local History room at Chiswick Library, but its opening hours are sadly restricted. |
