Andy, you omit the fact that to triangulate the masts to give an exact location needs authorisation under RIPA ( Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act ), which needs high up authorisation. Given this costs the police £40,000 each time, it is not given lightly, and only after other efforts at location are tried. So it takes some time. The Eastings & Northings are only provided for the nearest mast, which means the location of the phone used could be anywhere within a kilometre radius. If, however, the police receive an abandoned 999 call, where there is a disturbance heard, and that person manages to shout out their location, the police will know exactly where to go. Sometimes the police do know what they are talking about when they give advice. |
