Pete, you don't need to say the street you are on when you diall 999.As long as you shout or make it obvious you need help, the bt exchange connecting your 999 call will tell the police operator where you are.When the bt operator puts the call through, they will say to the police operator "this is (puts in name of the bt exchange they are calling from) connecting (number of the phone making the call) request for police made, disturbance heard"The police operator will then ask exchange for 'northings and eastings'.This identifies the mobile masts that are receiving the signal from the phone and by checking the signal strenth at these masts, it can tringulate the exact location where the call was made from.It doesn't matter if the signal is lost, once the mast receives the signal, it locks onto it.It sounds like a lot of faffing aboutbut in truth, it only takes a few seconds |
