Did anyone else catch this two-part series that finished last night? It looked at a spectrum of toe-curlingly awful TV extracts from that decade, focussing on the sexism, racism and homophobia that were rife because they were representative of mainstream attitudes. It also featured several of the protagonists from the extracts who are still around to comment and various youngsters of today, gogglebox-style watching in disbelief. I found it fascinating, not only because I remember those times quite clearly - I was in my twenties and thirties - but also because it led me to wonder which of current attitudes and behaviours will look equally repellent forty years on. It was on Channel 4 and the second part is being repeated tonight at 10.00 on 4seven. Also I guess it's on More4 for those with access. Well worth watching but be ready to cringe! |
