Yesterday I took my two young daughters to their Sunday morning hockey training at the Westminster (Roko) sports ground. There were about 30-40 young schoolchildren playing on various hockey pitches and at 11am a whistle blew and every child stood in respectful silence for a minute, along with the coaches, parents, and even the younger siblings who had come along to watch. It was quite moving.
Unfortunately, the adult football matches around us continued on, with all the gutteral shouting "referee!! On me 'ead!! One two!! To me! to me!" and the whistles blowing. It was such a shame that whilst the children were able to observe a respectful minutes silence in honour of the fallen, the footballers spoiled the moment for everyone. Please try harder next year lads, it's only one minute. |
