Dear Philippa How is mandatory recycling being implemented in other boroughs? I doubt if anything is to do with the contractors since all they have to do at present is throw the sacks into the truck whilst it is still moving, rather than having to stop and use a bin lift, one at a time. A great deal of effort has gone into encouraging recycling but too many people just aren't interested in something which they don't have to do, let alone asking for an audit! Have you looked at my calculations and suggestions on the Backlash thread 2/11/14? As far as I know the system I suggest is not in use elsewhere. It is just simple arithmetic using facts and applying technology. We're in the 21st century now and I'm sure we aren't incapable of getting the rubbish sorted out. Our waste is a valuable resource and with further cuts to day centres, libraries etc due to happen I believe that we must take the economy seriously and stop trying to base it on charitable contributions. It isn't rocket science and we aren't donkeys, so why do we need carrots? Anyone moving into the area will find that they have a number of recycling containers and all they have to do is apply themselves to the council website. Does everyone know that all metals are collected from the green box or a carrier bag next to, if they aren't too big. Saucepans, woks, coat hangers, cast iron, copper ,brass, locks, keys, nuts and bolts(in plastic bags) are all fine. I would be interested to hear other peoples views on the scanning of addressed sacks in order to determine the way forward for resolving the great rubbish saga, including the High Road. We managed a first with zero waste for the BPF Green Days without incineration or any contaminants. Burning valuable and finite resources will not help either the economy or climate change. |
