My apologies - I have now been advised that the introduction of the wheelie bins in the trial schemes led to a significant and measurable increase in recycling.

Because space in the wheelie bins is limited many people took much more care to separate out the rubbish that can be recycled into the green, white and blue bags.

It is accepted that not everyone will automatically do this but streets will be monitored for several weeks on collection days and those residents who are having issues with recycling will be "asked" to take more care.

Some residents have apparently even taken up the Council's offer for personal training on how to decide which items go in which receptacle.

The prize here is - less land fill, more recycling and substantial savings that will allow other services to be protected and council tax to be frozen.
