Both the Sterling Road (Bollo Lane) site and the one in Mortlake come under the West London Waste Authority (WLWA) so it doesn't matter whether you are a resident of Hounslow, Ealing or Richmond as all those boroughs are members. Most of the waste is currently taken to a Landfill site in Lincolnshire but as Kevin says the WLWA is planning to drastically increase the proportion of incineration that it does. This will save money on Landfill costs and counts towards the proportion of waste that the WLWA recycles. It seems to me very unlikely that incineration is actually any greener than landfill but the cost savings to local authorities will be huge. The reality is that actual recycling rates are likely to fall because landfill costs kept Councils honest, but now they won't be saving money by increasing recycling. That this huge backward step is being taken without a peep from the Green party shows how ineffectual they are in the local area. |
