Churchill did say; “If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always choose the open sea”. However this was on the eve of D Day when General De Gaulle was driving him completely up the wall. He added "Every time I have to decide between you and Roosevelt, I will always choose Roosevelt." Later, they made up over dinner and fine wine. See ‘D-Day: The Battle for Normandy’ by Antony Beevor. Churchill also said with a cooler head; “We hope to see a Europe where men of every country will think of being a European as of belonging to their native land, and...wherever they go in this wide domain...will truly feel, ‘Here I am at home.” |
