The modern (good) wood burning stoves are very efficient and eco in their polluting properties.  Well dried hardwood produces virtually no smoke.

I have a small fire on which I use smokeless fuel but do use kindling to get it started.  Sadly my old crab apple tree died and the dried twigs are excellent.
