| The latest round in the 'establishment cover-up' row is in the news only today, as I'm sure most people will have heard. Fiona Wolf, who has been appointed to chair the inquiry, has been questioned by a select committee on her connections with Leon Brittan and other members of the establishment whom the inquiry might be looking at. In reply, she said there was no conflict of interest as she had only been to dinner parties attended by Brittan five times. The PM has 'full confidence' in her ability to conduct the inquiry impartially. Make what you will of this, but the question most 'ordinary' people will be asking is why the great and the good seem to find it impossible to select anyone other than members of their own inner circle to lead an inquiry which might expose some of them to serious criminal allegations. She may have the full confidence of the Prime Minister, but isn't it the confidence of the rest of us that's more important? |
