Jim, yes I remember rapps well.A miserable old sod if ever there was one (I always thought his name was spelt with a W, as in wraps) If he couldn't make a fortune where his shop was situated, who could have ? He used to fry in beef dripping, which is an acquired taste that not everyone likes. But having a chip shop next to a pub, people that had just had a few pints would love the taste of chips even if they had been cooked in engine oil.He did have one habit, that even as a youngster I found unpleasant, when I was about to put a pan of chips on, I would bring the oil up to 310što make sure the oil was hot enough.Old man raps (who if remember correctly could have doubled for Captain Pugwash) used to spit in his oil.If the goblet sank, the oil was not hot enough. If the goblet shot across the surface of the oil jumping and crackling, in went the spuds. |
