"lots of new council taxes into their coffers. In return our services are being slashed." This rather neglects to mention: - the staggering level of cuts in local government funding from central government since 2010, which explains the desire for more residents (although that's also city-wide policy in the London Plan) - the gibbering nonsense of all parties in the light of the above advocating multi-year freezes/cuts in council tax rather than being honest and raising it in line with inflation - the temptation to flog off any land for housing while the market's overheated. I know it's fun to blame councils for everything, but it's worth understanding what they're up against right now and why they might be frantically trying to cut costs and bring in more money. It's only going to get worse unless people wake up. [also, local London control of taxation now, please, to get us out from under Whitehall's mismanaging thumb, there's more than enough cash sloshing around this city to keep basic things like waste disposal running properly] |
