The site had been a famous local School..Staveley Road Secondary Modern for Boys (with Girls' School next door)...since the 1938 and before. If you failed the 11+ that's generally where you ended up.Both main entrances were in Staveley Road. There was a boys football pitch on the Staveley Road side ...to the left...on which a large hall was built ..only to be subsequently demolished be caused asbestos had been used. On the Burlington Lane side...almost opposite the Station... was a girls sports field. There was no public access through the School grounds. Gerry Francis the England footballer went to the School and in September 1944 the area suffered damage from the V2 rocket. Gated communities may be the future... with so many scallywags roaming around etc etc |
