I never really got to understand why, apart from 'soft water' from the brooks, South Acton became 'laundry central' at the turn of the 20th century with, it is reported, a 'peak' of over 200 laundries in a one mile radius hence 'Soap Sud Island' and St. Alban's being called the 'Soap Sud cathedral'. |
