My experience is the fat is not the biggest problem. The items that do not break down and disperse are the problem. On the development where I live there is a set of pumps and tanks to control the waste from the ~200 properties. There have been frequent breakdowns - never from fat. The biggest culprits are nappies and other items people decide to flush away but do not breakdown in the way toilet paper does. I'd guess these are the same for fatbergs - the fat deposits around the partial blockages caused by these large items. Why people think its ok to flush such items is beyond me. But then, equally, peoples' capacity for being stupid, selfish and thoughtless is demonstrated daily. Hey ho, its the modern way...
