I am no apologist for the gutter press but I am always amused when those on the Left choose to remember the Daily Mail's fascist leanings in the 1930's. I spent many happy hours as a university student perusing micro-fiche copies of the [Manchester] Guardian from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As a member of the University Anti-Apartheid Group it was with a deep sense shock that I read how this 'Liberal' newspaper had almost alone amongst British newspapers backed "the plucky little Boers". Guardian journalists and editors were therefore the running-dogs and lick spittles of Kaiser Bill and his murderous crew also backed President Kruger with modern weaponry and cash. Ultimately The Guardian helped create the Apartheid Regime that in the late twentieth century it so despised. The lesson to be learnt? Check every fact that you read in a newspaper and never let them form your opinions. |
