The Mike Brown Report – The report Chiswick has been waiting for: I visited last night. First impressions: The exterior looks good and, upon entering, I was very impressed. Having kept much of the original fixtures, it’s surprising just how much extra space has been created and how much more pleasant and warmer the environment feels. The lighting is very warm too; I would guess that a lot of thought has gone into the lighting alone. However, the acoustics, as someone had told me about, are terrible. With just an average number of people in the bar, the noise created was piercing, which I found very uncomfortable. There was also a guitarist who’d been stuck in the corner, so barely viewable, but you couldn’t half hear him! He had speakers, which weren’t required at all; not in that resonating environment. Time to buy a drink: The bar was relatively busy but not overly so. We must have waited about 20 minutes to get served. The bar staff were running up and down, all seemingly very busy, but busy doing what, I’m unsure of. They were all wearing butchers’ style pinnies, and I didn’t know if some of them were kitchen staff passing through or what. They didn’t seem to have any awareness of who had been waiting at the bar or care much either, other than a tallish guy with a beard who was very aware and attentive. I asked what ciders were available and was told one, a draught, the brand of which I didn’t catch the name of, but tried it and didn’t think much of it at all – fizzy, empty tasting and dry. I always drank Bulmers in the George IV but that’s gone, as it seems have the other draught and bottled ciders they once held, which I, occasionally, drank. I didn’t visit the ‘Games Room’ situated on the mezzanine floor, but a friend of mine did and said that there is a dartboard and TV up there. I did check out the garden, which looked good and was full of people. I also visited the area of the lavatories, which are new, and seem nice enough, although, upon entering the area, there is a bump/slope in the timber floor, and is not obviously visible. Some people will definitely hit the deck at this point, especially when they’ve had a few. Fullers are quoted as saying that they were keeping the George IV very much as a pub, but they haven’t in my opinion; it’s been completely poncified to bring it in line with what I gather is their perception of the requirements of bullshit Chiswick, with the position of the dartboard and sole TV helping to confirm this, being high up on the naughty step, out of the general public view. It goes without saying that I was generally disappointed with the place, and I was glad to get out of there, mainly because of the noise; but full marks for the general layout and décor. Could I do any better? Probably not – there may not be enough ‘pub’ people in Chiswick to make a traditional pub in that location a viable option nowadays. Whether there’s enough ‘gastro’ people in Chiswick to make it work, only time will tell. Maybe there are just too many pubs, bars and restaurants in Chiswick. I think Fullers have taken a gamble with this theme, but they have the figures, so they may know that leaving it as a traditional pub would also have been a gamble, and maybe a bigger one. |
