Hogarth’s House is marking the 250th anniversary of the death of ‘the father of English Painting’ William Hogarth with a new exhibition of self-portraits by contemporary artists in honour of Hogarth entitled ‘Small Self’.

The Small Self exhibition opens on Saturday, 20 September 2014 and includes contributions by major British artists and celebrities.

The self-portraits include works by Peter Blake, the William Hogarth Trust's patron, Royal Academicians William Bowyer, Anthony Green, Ken Howard and Humphrey Ocean, cartoonists Steve Bell and Martin Rowson, designer Cath Kidston, numerous members of the New English Art Club, writers Jacqueline Wilson and Mike McCartney and performers such as Harry Hill, Holly Johnson, Joanna Lumley and Vic Reeves.
This unusual project was the brainchild of artists Chrissy Blake, a founder trustee, and Jason Bowyer, a current trustee of the William Hogarth Trust. They created and developed the concept of the exhibition as a means of attracting a different audience to Hogarth's House and engaging modern artists with its work. A catalogue showing all of the portraits in full colour will be available during the exhibition.
Guest curator Jason Bowyer said; ‘The respect for Hogarth’s work was evident in the fine response by so many artists to our request for self-portraits for this show. The portraits are diverse in medium, materials and concept.  We hope this exhibition will inspire a continuing interest in and development of self-portraiture.’
Guest curator Chrissy Blake said; ‘On the 250th anniversary of Hogarth’s death we hope this celebration of his continuing influence, is a fitting commemoration in the beautiful country house he called home.’
