Ann - I live opposite a young lady who uses a guide dog. When she brings the dog out to do it's business or is heading off in the morning, the dog does not have its harness on and is very happy and of waggy tail. Also I have seen her going out with sighted friends and the dog only has a lead and is acting like any other happy dog. However as soon as the harness goes on that dog knows she is working. And of an evening when she comes back, because they both know the road, the young lady drops the harness and only has the lead, and tail immediately starts wagging. My view is this dog is extremely happy because not only is its brain being used but it is with a happy owner. You could say the same for any working dog, police dogs, sniffer dogs etc. All dogs need mental stimulation.....you just need to watch these dogs at work and then their reaction when they know they have performed their role. OK not all dogs are designed to do these roles but those that do, I strongly believe, are extremely happy. You also have to consider the companionship guide dogs bring. I cannot imagine living without sight but to know you have a companion with you when you venture out surely must make life a lot easier. |
