So sorry to hear this and, sadly, the elderly are always soft targets. I am very strong with my elderly neighbours who frequently go out with all their' worldly goods in a large handbag. As I know them all pretty well they agree to be subject to a bag inspection - do you need your pension book, passport, etc. when you go for the paper or just to buy some food. By the time I have persuaded them that some money, one credit/debit card (and we make a note of the numbers for them in the event of a mishap) a phone, tissues and a lipstick are usually all they need and the bag very much lighter. I also ask them to put their house keys on a lanyard or in a pocket. This procedure has helped several of them to feel secure when out and about and to know that they do not lose everything if the bag is taken or left behind somewhere. Please do the same for your elderly to keep them safe. A thief rarely takes a small handbag. |
