Sorry, I clearly didn't articulate myself well. The point I was trying to make is this. We all, from time to time, chose to break the law based on what we think is our own assessment of risk—that was the speeding driver analogy, BUT if we get caught we don't for one second question that we were in the wrong, we most usually are annoyed that we got caught. The prevailing cyclists' attitude here is that we were never wrong in the first place, the signs shouldn't be there. And that's the difference I was pondering. Somebody has decided a speed limit makes sense. Even the motorists ignoring it tend to agree with it's general purpose and legitimacy. Cyclists disobeying signs don't—you can see here they are justifying their behaviour and saying the signs shouldn't be adhered to rather than taking a "it's a fair cop" approach. |
