I was on a trial of contactless cards for the tube and didn't have any problems with the system itself but people should be aware of the following; - don't carry both Oyster and a contactless card with Oyster in the same wallet. As I found out, there is a good chance you may swipe in with one card and swipe out with another so be charged the maximum fare twice. You can get a refund if you do this but it is a bit of a faff to claim it. - the card readers take a fraction of a second longer to respond to a contactless card with Oyster compared to an ordinary Oyster card. Apparently one sixth of a second longer. This lag was noticeable enough that I've gone back to using an ordinary Oyster card as it just feels quicker. - I have other contactless cards in my wallet not enabled with Oyster but this means you get "card clash" and the gate won't open when you hold the wallet against a reader. So now it means putting the Oyster card on one side of my wallet, opening the wallet and holding the right side of the wallet against the reader. Previously I didn't need to open the wallet and could just hold it against the reader. This seems to be a backwards step to me but with all banks issuing contactless cards these days, I'm not sure TfL can do much about this. |
