Businesses pay business rates - they would only pay some council tax if anyone lived on/over the premises, business rates are set by central government and only collected by the local authority, the rent of course is down to the landlord. What I think local councils could and should do, is look at the rents charged on commercial premises where the local authority is the landlord, these are mainly not in high streets and a lot of them are struggling, wouldn't it be great if Hounslow could lead the way in this? It's no good all the powers that be hand-wringing over the state and fate of our high streets and small local parades of shops if they are not prepared to do something practical, and in this they could, if the will is there. |
