I did jury service in a coroner's court a few years ago and it was very interesting. They save up all the slightly more 'difficult' deaths for a two-week period when they get a jury in to hear them all, so Monday morning 9am we were in court, hearing our first case (the coroner selects the jurors). Each witness gets cross-examined by the coroner and lawyers representing interested parties, and then any juror can cross-examine the witness which is great and makes you feel really involved - and you don't go away thinking "I wish they'd asked about X". One of the cases we heard was rather sad though - a man who was the defendant in a criminal case and when pronounced guilty, committed suicide in the dock (the first person ever to commit suicide in the dock of a British court). |
