Had a similar-ish issue earlier in the year when we got a PCN, even though parking had been paid for over RingGo.

It transpired that when the number plate was originally entered on the RingGo system, the final character was entered as 0 (zero) rather than O (letter O). Hounslow did cancel the PCN - but not without putting some very snotty wording in their letter about how fortunate we should consider ourselves to be blah blah - I suspect the fact that we had paid for 20 or so previous sessions with the incorrect number plate and had not received a PCN had something to do with this.

I would appeal on the basis that as you can clearly demonstrate that both cars are registered to the same address there has been no intent to not pay and was simply human error in using a new system. As you say, this kind of mistake is impossible with paper tickets from machines and I would really emphasise that point.
