Well put, Paul, although it's worth bearing in mind there's a strong pro-Heathrow (and presumably anti-Boris) lobby on the right of the Tories, around the Chancellor and the Bow Group, while if we were genuinely starting from scratch we'd be looking north west of London, not at the Estuary.  Heathrow's actually an excellent place for an airport, but not for runways with the prevailing wind in the UK (the trick is finding a balance between location and runway impact, which is why Gatwick is probably the best compromise).

Claire; anyone agreeing with Boris has historically turned out to have been fooled by whatever act he has put on this week.  He's a serially mendacious, avaricious, selfish and really rather horrible man, not some kind of far-seeing visionary, and just because he pretends to agree with you doesn't change that.  He has no more interest in aviation than he has in buses, despite which he's done enough damage there to suggest that giving him any more power over us would be a dreadful mistake.  If he'd abandoned this nonsense two years ago and 100% backed Gatwick, Heathrow wouldn't have a chance, but his personal vanity and ambition wouldn't allow it.
