Hi Gigi,
I, myself, suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Panic Attacks - and have found Cognitive Behavioural Therapy the most useful and successful treatment. Though sometimes a bit of pharmaceutical support is necessary to get me (one? the patient?) sufficiently calm/focussed/clear headed to actually be able to make it to the CBT session and then engage with the therapist.  I know that, in my case, when my anxiety is free-wheeling I could be talking to a world expert with a hypnotic voice and nothing would help - the adrenalin surging through my system would make it impossible for me to take in or process anything that was being said.
If your friend can cope with a short-ish journey, there's a wonderful "clinic" called the Alma Practice on Exhibition Road in South Kensington - I've seen two of their CBT therapists over the years when my Panic Disorder has really flared up, and they have really saved me. And, compared to the Priory and Harley Street, they're pretty reasonable (£95/session if I remember correctly). Can't recommend them highly enough.
Good luck to your friend - and please feel free to PM me if you think I can be of any help with advice of any sort.
Sarah x
