It was a progression I guess Charles. DooWop is 50's, NS 60's. The beat/groove is different. I would say, from my experience, NS tends to be those recordings that never quite made it and in some instances were trying to sound like Motown/Detroit. Indeed, some went to another leve and were good if not better. If you listen to 'The same old song'/The Four Tops...or 'Uptight'/Stevie Wonder they are great dancers typical of a NS beat. Also check out 'Love love love'/Bobby Hebb. It's all about the music and dancing. NS has the harmonies but is 4 on the floor. There are more complicated tunes like 'I didn't know how to'/The Constellations....absolute toal masterpiece of production and harmonies. Great to dance to because it has so many percussion hooks, fills and interesting strings that a dancer can utilise for his/her performance. Philly soul is interesting. Sixties Philly soul was trying to emulate Motown. Indeed some producers actually went to Detroit to get the vibe and the session musicians on their records! But the others like 'At the top of the stairts'/The Formations, 'Aint nothing but a house party'/The Showstoppers, 'Gotta have your love'/The Sapphires https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp8gtlxaRek ), were recorded in Philly with musicians who would later (some) become part of MFSB and The Salsoul orchestra. It's a long story..but I think a few writers and producers changed direction added more strings, harp, vibes and The Philly Sound of the 1970's was born with the likes of 'Backstabbers'/The O Jays, Three Degrees and hundreds of other groups/songs. In my opinion this is one of the earliest 'Philly Sound' releases from around 1969. It has that sound deviating away from Motown and become an entity on its own. The rest is history. I am lucky to have recorded with some of these musicians in 2008. That is how powerful this music has been to me...: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH13JpI5E8c Of course The Dells were Chicago, but fantastic..really great songs and harmonies. Try this one from them 'Run for cover'/The Dells:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gxXHOkAp9w Great music. If your feet are tapping...you should be dancing. Carl |
