As crazy as this sounds, I love all the above and frequently attend soul and Northern Soul dance events up and down the country. My local is the 'Teddington Soulnites' and I join them as often as I can for their monthly Friday evening affair. But, I notice many who attend these events don't dance often and if they do, they seem slightly detached from the groove and look as though they need support! As I feel strongly about dance etiquette and for example, not dancing with glasses of beer or wine on the dance floor and shaking talcum powder all over the place to allow an easier 'slide' (a technique in soul dancing), which I consider dangerous and inappropriate at some venues, I was seriously thinking of hiring a local hall, and inviting would be dancers to attend and give some basic steps, to help grow confidence whist I also lecture about safety on the dance floor etc. It would be a social event to learn the rudiments of 4/4 time soul dancing with a view to maybe considering some more interesting steps/routines to have a performance and really show off! As I am fishing, and never done this before, I thought I would ask on my local forum whether individuals on here who are fed up of bad news on the TV, gardening and ironing would be interested in such an idea? I would probably go mid week for a few weeks and see how it goes. Monday I will investigate venues for price, because nothing is free! I would hope the venue had CD/music playback capabilities and enough room on their dance floor to trip and not end up on top of somebody else. Also just to let you know I am a song writer and have recorded in Detroit and Philadelphia the very styles of music I aspired to as a youth in Hull using some of the original musicians on the classics. Last week a co write of mine was released by UK soul singer Diane Shaw called 'Good lovin man'...and I am 55motown (and 'Bandtraxs' and 'Phillysoultronics') on YouTube for example! Let me know....little acorns! And here are some typical tracks I would consider playing at such an event: I watched you slowly slip away/Howard Guyton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wATup7oQvI Wear it on your face/The Dells https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EVSJoJiRiE No one could love you more/Gladys Knight and the Pips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A1baj34cOs See you when I get there/Lou Rawls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8UELBthTX8 Got to get you back/Sons of Robin Stone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5YJmEOelM0 This is tentative, not a disco or vinyl event..it's purely to learn some nice dance steps and awareness. Thank you Carl Dixon ps: this is one of my songs: Tell me (crying over you)/Spyder Turner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDeV6ipY3ug |
