I suspect you are entirely right Angus. But I couldn't see the car coming along the outside lane because the car waiting to park was in my way. This was no problem to anyone as I was not yet in place to move into the outside lane. I felt I had to at least get out of the parking space to let the car in. But, as with most people, they wanted to back in to the space rather than go forwards into it, so I had to move at least a car's length forwards myself. But only then did I see there was a car coming along the outside lane. But I was moving forwards and all my driving techniques tell me not to brake unless you have to (saving fuel, saving brake wear, looking after the planet...OK I shouldn't have been in a car in the first place OMG where do you stop!!!). But the pictures show SO clearly I tried to move into the outside lane at the first opportunity without making dramatic manoeuvres as per Highway Code (when did anyone last read that lovely document?). There were NO other vehicles anywhere let alone buses. I moved over at the first opportunity unless of course I should have braked....I took 1.792 seconds to travel less than one car's length = 8.37mph, surely not going too fast to have to brake? I'm beginning to think it would be safer and saner to be INSIDE the madhouse than outside. |
