Amazing how you can never do anything right on this forum.  The cat was trapped in a rear light well (I simplified by saying garden) and couldn't get out.  I went to the vet to ask for advice and they said to take it to them and they would trace to owner, which is what I did.  I could put it back in the light well if you like and wait for it to starve to death but thought the owner might like it back.  Maybe not.
