Richard, I know you are very clued-up about flight paths etc., so could you possibly throw some light on something I saw today?

I was in Langley Drive, Acton about 6.15pm when I spotted a jumbo jet (one of those squat-looking ones) executing quite a tight turn to its left, almost overhead, and seemingly a little lower than normal for an approach to LHR (though planes approaching over Chiswick are normally further away as seen from Acton, so the height could have been a false impression). Also, it appeared to have been heading broadly north before making this turn. It then flew off towards Heathrow. I've never seen an airliner on this heading before, or one turning like that over Chiswick/Acton. Any ideas what might have been happening?
