"our generation have not been able to create a style of building unique to us that we all actually like" We've also created a planning system that is geared to enabling maximum profit and keeping meddling aesthetic experts and consultation to an insulting minimum. What's happening to planning isn't a completely mysterious force, it's an active political ideology that holds that what a property owner does with their property is their own business and attempts to ensure, say, a cohesive and coherent street environment or a mix of uses acceptable to the public as expressed through the ballot box is red tape holding back the noble entrepreneur*. The only counter to this is therefore a political one, they're not going to change course. * this is basically US libertarian-influenced right wing politics, of course. It's not a particularly democratic movement, in fact in some ways it's the third 20th century totalitarian movement after European fascism and communism. |
