It's hugely helpful that CAMRA have spotted this issue, are acting on it proactively and bringing their expertise to bear. I think the problem here is that Spirit Group are not the freeholders of the land (which includes Sofa Workshop, the parking to the rear of that shop and the architects' practice down Brackley Road). So, as Adam O'Neill and Adam Beamish have pointed out, this appears to be a 'rock and a hard place' situation - and one which requires some alternative strategies/tactics. I urge you to follow them all up - particularly applying pressure on Councillor/Conservation Officers to adopt the tactical solution of an extension to the Conservation Area. Oh, and that deathly silent, apparent waste of space/money, Rachel Victor-Sampson (Chiswick Town Centre Manager (sic)), should be impelled to take up this issue on our behalf. Finally, can I also point out a rather overlooked matter - that beyond the architectural and community asset points we should also consider the human perspective; there are several members of staff living on site who until yesterday had no inkling that they faced imminent homelessness and potential unemployment and have had no opportunity to consider their position (the unemployment issue does, of course, apply to all members of staff regardless of their circumstances). That, to me, is reprehensible and represents the level of corporate greed exposed by this application. Perhaps someone with a legal background could advise on the human rights aspects that could be engaged here (although I suspect there are none). |
