Baroness Warsi was the main guest at a Community Cohesion conference at Hounslow Civic Centre which I had the honour of participating in a few years back (although it was later meticulously airbrushed from history by the then Chief Executive who objected to the nature of my contribution, but I digress). I gained the impression then that here was a person who would follow the Party Line to ascend the greasy pole - but only up to a point. Beneath it all there were some real principles which, if put to the test, might under certain circumstances assert themselves. It is amusingly ironic that as Muslims come to play an ever more important role in business, local and national government and all the other institutions of our society there will increasingly become a natural "interest group" to counter that of organised Zionism, which has exercised a deeply unhealthy influence over the policies of Western governments for generations and has effectively ensured that carte blanche is given to Israel to do whatever it wishes and to operate an openly racist regime which would rightly be condemned anywhere else in the world. Big respect to Baroness Warsi. Let's hope that she can ride the flak and the smears that she will now receive from the pro-Israel media and emerge the stronger for having taken such a courageous and principled stand. |
