On Monday 4th from 7.30 the ringers of St Nicholas Church will be tolling a bell once for each name on the parish war memorial. Bell towers across the country will be doing the same thing at various times, in commemoration of the UK's declaration of war in 1914.
The rest of the ringers' regular Monday practice will be rung with the bells half muffled, as at funerals and on Remembrance Sunday. It's quite a haunting sound so if you're in the area (by the river behind the Hogarth roundabout) do listen out. |
