As the organiser/creator of Super Saturday of Sport - I just want to say thank you to all who have taken the time to write and show concern for the event. It is quite humbling that Chiswick has become as passionate about the event - as I am/was. I believe we created a fantastic day and already the anecdotes prove that Chiswick not only became engaged in activity on the day - but many local sports clubs are already seeing new members as a result of the interest sparked on July 19. I do want to be clear that I accept that Carillion had to fine for me for the breach - as I did indeed break the rules. I therefore accept that it is my responsibility to pay the fine - although I do appreciate the many offers to reimburse me. The fine did come with a warning that the complaint by one resident "may have an impact on future events you want to hold at Turnham Green". It has been reported to me, (by more than one source) that this said complainant has vowed to "shut Super Saturday down" (with more colourful language than I am prepared to type). My outstanding worry - is that for many years the views of a minority have usurped the interests of the greater Chiswick community. Super Saturday is not the only event to find itself up against this challenge and sadly some events have never even made it to realisation before they were stopped. Surely it is time this Ombudsman ruling (1998) is challenged or at least re-negotiated locally so the interests of all Chiswick residents are satisfied. |
